GenScan

GenScan is a genetic examination that reveals the genetic predispositions to various diseases and properties of the organism. Based on the special analysis of DNA, a propensity for more than twenty frequent diseases and physiological properties of the organism can be determined. The results of the GenScan analysis draw the attention of the client and his physician to potential risks of severe diseases and enable early and effective prophylactic intervention.

Analysis of genes can provide information not only about diseases but also about various properties of the human organism. These properties include, e.g., the ability of the organism to breakdown waste substances and alcohol, which is associated with aging and a predisposition for cancer. A resistance to HIV or a suitability to use hormonal substitution therapy in females can also be tested. The client can also be informaed as to whether it is suitable for him/her to drink coffee.

A comprehensive summary report is prepared for the client with scientific results of important DNA polymorphisms. Explanation of the terms, methodological instruction for subsequent procedure and a brief background of tested conditions or their groups is a part of the report.

The course of the complex GenScan genetic analysis can be explained in several steps as follows:
The first step is a painless collection of a sample of DNA. The collection is performed with a special sponge for collection of genetic material from the surface of the mucous membrane in the mouth. Then, the sample is sent to the GHC Genetics laboratory , which performs isolation of DNA. Isolated DNA undergoes a complex genetic analysis. The results of the analysis are evaluated, and the outputs are included in the detailed Personal Genetic Analysis report. The client receives the report within ten weeks after the sample collection, either directly or via a contractual physician. The complex interpretation of the report is mainly the responsibility of your treating physician. However, it is prepared to be comprehensible also to the lay public.

What is analyzed by GenScan:

  • myocardial infarction which is, together with other cardiovascular diseases, responsible for more than 50% of deaths in the Czech Republic
  • stroke which causes on average 45 deaths per day,
  • atherosclerosis which causes myocardial infarction and stroke,
  • hypertension because this disease affects 20 to 30% of the adult population,
  • vascular thrombosis (accounts for 15 to 25 thousand new cases per year),
  • breast cancer which causes 15% of the mortality from cancer diseases among women,
  • prostate cancer – the second most common cause of death from cancer in males
  • lung cancer which caused 5,536 patient deaths in 2005,
  • diabetes because 6.8% of all males and 7.6% of all females in the Czech Republic suffer from diabetes,
  • obesity because the Czech Republic ranks in second place in obesity in Europe and Czech women are the fattest among European women,
  • osteoporosis (every third woman in the Czech Republic does not know she has this disease),
  • Alzheimer's disease – there are 60,000 patients with this disease in the Czech Republic, which is the number of inhabitants in, for example, Opava!
  • celiac disease in its untreated form increases a risk of aggressive cancer of lymphatic nodes,
  • ankylous spondylitis which causes stiffness of your backbone and vertebral adhesions,
  • lung emphysema which affects 8 out of 100 people,
  • pharmacogenetics investigates the genetic aspects of pharmacotherapy, especially in relation to undesirable and desirable effects of drugs and their dosage.

The report about the GenScan Personal Genetic Analysis is prepared for a client. This report includes the precise results of the DNA examination and an evaluation of the genetic dispositions for individua; diseases. A description of individual diseases and a preventive recommendation individually suitable for the relevant client constitute a part of this report.
An overall interpretation of the report should be performed mainly by certified and contractual physicians of GHC GENETICS or by the physicians of the CHC clinic in Prague and other specialists on predictive genetics and preventive medicine.
